Deciding Which Infusion Pump to Use

Deciding between the ALZET® Osmotic Pump and iPRECIO® Programmable Infusion Pump for your study does not have to be a grueling process.  Below we’ve highlighted the benefits of each pump and summarized their similarities and differences to help you make your decision.  As always, if you’re still stuck, don’t hesitate to contact ALZET Technical Support for more guidance.

ALZET® Osmotic Pumps

Small, implantable pumps for research in mice, rats, and other laboratory animals.

The unique mechanism by which ALZET pumps operate, allows compounds of any molecular conformation to be delivered predictably at controlled rates, independent of their physical and chemical properties.

These minipumps deliver drugs, hormones, and other test agents at continuous and controlled rates, for durations ranging from one day to six weeks, without the need for external connections or frequent handling. Their unattended operation eliminates the need for repeated nighttime or weekend dosing by lab personnel.

ALZET minipumps can be used for systemic administration when implanted subcutaneously or intraperitoneally. They can also be attached to a catheter for intravenous, intracerebral, intra-arterial infusion, or targeted delivery.

iPRECIO® Programmable Pumps

An advanced infusion device for drug delivery applications in mice, rats and larger animals.

With versatile, programmable functions and a refillable reservoir, this implantable infusion pump enables full control over dosing studies and empowers researchers to execute even the most complex dosing protocols.  These include: multiple bolus dosing, variable/constant delivery, escalating drug administration, and more.

With the user-friendly iPRECIO management software, the infusion profile is programmed and downloaded to the pump’s memory chip. Pump refilling is possible via a percutaneously accessible septum, enabling researchers to change solutions or refill the pump during the course of the study.
